A Documentary Family Photographer's Lucky Moment

Seattle-A-Day-Life-Photographer-5A documentary family photographer I've gotten to know recently ( Minna Ridderstolpe based in Stockholm, Sweden) posted an image on Instagram , of twin girls messing around with their bottles while eating – water splattering everywhere.

"I always secretly hope for this to happen when kids eat. I am sorry parents - but this is a documentary photographer's lucky moment." - Minna

Her caption really stuck with me, and I just knew I had to share it with you.Minna's words are just the perfect way to explain what a family photojournalist wants to capture versus what a lifestyle photographer is looking for. The lifestyle photographer sets up sessions for joyful picture perfect shots, whereas the documentary family photographer waits for real life to happen – and sometimes to go wrong. So wrong that it is right. Meltdowns, tantrums, naughty moments, accidents, messes, and all the weird stuff kids do, are a part of childhood as well as parenthood. Let's embrace it!
